Francesco Hayez era un enamorado de la historia. No sabemos si para él todo tiempo pasado era mejor, pero sin duda le parecía lo suficientemente interesante como para pintarlo. Y aprovechando la marea romántica que barría Europa, pintó este icono, quizás la pintura italiana más conocida del XIX.
